The professional

Martin has been working in the digital industry since before the web started (he once told the editor of the British Weekly Telegraph that there was this thing called ‘the Internet’ he might like to consider putting his paper on).

Starting his career at BT Research Laboratories Human Factors Unit, he worked on projects as diverse as the interaction design of collaborative virtual environments, the world’s first TV on demand service, the development of interaction design standards for BT products and the specification for the stripy red and yellow tents you see on streets that telephone engineers sit inside and drink tea.

After leaving BT, Martin spent the next ten or so years working in media, web and usability agencies in the UK and NZ.

Along the way he claims to have learned a lot about interaction design, information architecture, wire-framing and the realities of the project lifecycle.

During his career he has worked for diverse clients such as Dell, BG, BT, SAP, The Blue Cross pet charity, Chelsea sugar, MedicAlert NZ, Perpetual Trust and many government departments both in NZ and the UK.

Qualifications: BSc (Hons) Biological Sciences, MA Design for Interactive media (dist)

The person

Martin is a recent émigré from the United Kingdom having arrived with Heather, his partner and Kenan, his young son. When not working he spends a significant amount of time playing Star Wars Lego with his son or getting involved in the committee of the Society of Beer Advocates (www.soba.org.nz), a not for profit organisation set up to campaign for a greater appreciation of craft beer. An important contributory factor in Martin’s employment at OU is the fact that in his spare time he makes beer, although since he joined, Trent has commented that there has been a suspicious absence of any free, foaming cold ones.
