Information Architecture Design

The organisation and labelling of information is a critical aspect for large web sites. We get users to perform card sorting to help create an information architecture that ensures information is easy to find.

Card sorting is a categorization method where users sort cards depicting various concepts into categories that make sense to them. Card sorting creates user-centred content categories and interaction models on which subsequent design elements can be based.

Benefits

The results from information architecture activities are used to build intuitive navigation systems and improve the "findability" of information. Card sorting is very effective and is quick to apply. It draws out the natural groupings of information in a way that avoids asking users directly. Card sorting also involves the users in the design process and helps to demonstrate that the system will be created with the users' needs in mind.

Typical deliverable

A report on a recommended information architecture and site structure. Often this includes proposed site structure diagram/s.

Typical duration

2 - 6 weeks.

Clients

We are New Zealand’s leaders in Information Architecture, having built our own card sorting tool, spoken at conferences all over the world, and written articles in online journals. We have completed over 25 open and closed card sorts, online and in-person, with up to 7,000 participants. We also have in-depth experience in designing navigation systems to support the IA.
