Sovereign

Interface design for insurance applications

About the client

Sovereign is one of New Zealand’s leading personal and business life insurance providers. They also provide health insurance, home loans, investment and supperanuation products to more than 650,000 customers.

The scenario

Sovereign wanted to produce an efficient & effective user interface for Advisors, Insurance Managers, & internal employees to process multi-user and multi-benefit insurance applications. It was determined that a major risk to the project was not having the right interface and as a result Sovereign engaged Optimal to ensure that key user groups, their goals and behavioural traits were inherent in the design of the interface.

Our approach

In order to achive the brief Optimal and Sovereign decided on an approach that involved user reseearch and testing activities at critical steps throughout the design process. These activities included:

  • Undertaking stakeholder interviews and contexual enquiry with the purpose of creating draft personas that were representative of the primary users – Advisors and Insurance Managers.
  • Using the personas as a tool to enable user-centric design decisions during the conceptual and detailed design phases.
  • Testing early stage concepts with Advisors and Insurance Managers via interactive prototypes.

Deliverables

  • Discovery Phase Insights document to summarise the user research;
  • Personas;
  • Concept sketches;
  • Annotated wireframes

Outcomes

  • Provided Sovereign with insights around the key user groups of the interface and a set of wireframes that were tailored to meet the needs of these users;
  • Highlighted to Sovereign the high priority that Advisors and Insurance Managers placed on the relationships they have with their clients and the impact that this has on their computer and internet usage during client meetings. This changed the way that the interface was designed;
  • Delivered insights to Sovereign that surfaced potential opportunities for future design enhancements
